Now that summer’s here, it’s time to shake off the excesses of winter and update the home to help make the most of the summer season. Maybe you’d like to complete the project yourself, but an interior decorator is always an option if you are time-poor or if you’re not quite sure what you want.
The first and most important rule is to keep things simple. Summer is a time for simplicity in design, rather than for ornate fabrics and decorations. The easiest way to change the look of the home is by changing the colour. Maybe you’d like to add a feature wall, or change the colour of the soft furnishings. Soft, neutral colours with the addition of a bright accent colour really helps to emphasise a room and create some punch. Rather than buying new furniture every season – very expensive and unnecessary! – buy some slip covers or have some custom-made. You will get furniture that looks brand new for a fraction of the cost.
If your carpets are looking worn, consider calling a carpet repairer or replacing them. You could even remove the carpets altogether in favour of a polished timber floor. Heavy curtains can give the room a wintry feel and make it feel heavier than it needs to, so take those down and replace them with some lightweight, sheer curtains. For added privacy, consider a close-fitting blind that can be rolled up during the day.
In the backyard, you can opt to carry out maintenance tasks yourself or you can hire a garden maintenance company to ensure that plants are looking their best and frame the garden perfectly for summer entertaining. Paint weathered outdoor furniture and consider adding a hammock or swinging pod chair for some laidback style. Add some
new garden lighting – perhaps you could highlight a tree or water feature. Hurricane lamps and candles are easy, cheap ways to provide atmospheric lighting around the entertaining areas.
As you can see, even a few simple changes can make all the difference to your home in the summer months. A few quick changes and your place will be somewhere that you enjoy, no matter what the temperatures reach!
