Walls need to be cleaned at regular intervals as they can be covered in dirt, fingerprints, scuff marks, and other items such as crayons or markers. Firstly, vacuum the walls to remove loose dust and any cobwebs. Once done, use an all purpose cleaner that is suitable for walls. Always wash walls from the bottom to the top, overlapping areas that have already been cleaned in order to prevent streaks. Lift crayon marks using mineral spirits. Remove shine by sponging lightly with hot water. To remove any transparent tape, use a warm iron over a protective cloth. This will loosen its adhesive backing, making it easy to peel off.
One solution that you can make at home to remove dirt from painted walls is half a cup of vinegar, one cup of clear ammonia, and a quarter of a cup of baking soda in a bucket of water. Apply to the walls using a sponge and rinse with clean water. If you have rough surfaces on your walls, use an old nylon stocking or sock as they won’t tear and leave bits that can be hard to remove on the surface. Because this is a strong solution, you will need to work in a well-ventilated area and wear rubber gloves when using it.
A brick wall can be easily cleaned using a pressure washer or a solution of hot water and all purpose cleaner. Outdoor painted walls can be cleaned by using a pressure washer on a lower setting so as not to remove paint. Alternatively you can scrub with an outdoor cleaning solution.
Most paper wallpaper is considered to be non-washable and thus require special cleaning techniques. However, many types of wallpaper are now made from washable vinyl. Sponge washable wallpaper with a mild detergent. Grease stains on washable wallpaper can be lifted by using a paste made from cornstarch and water. On non-washable wallpaper, remove them by placing a blotter over the spot and pressing on it with a moderately hot iron. Any smudges, fingerprints or pencil marks can be removed from wallpaper by gently rubbing with an art gum eraser.
