Topic: Locks
If you’ve accidentally locked yourself out of your home or you need new locks or security systems installed, a locksmith is absolutely essential. However, since you are dealing with the security of your home, you want to make sure that you choose a locksmith that is reliable and trustworthy. Here are our tips to help you ensure that you are choosing the right locksmith.
Check Their Qualifications
The first thing that you need to do when choosing a locksmith is to check all their qualifications. You need to make sure that they are fully trained and qualified in their trade and that they hold all of the necessary insurances. You should also make sure that the locksmith that you choose is appropriately accredited. The locksmith should be more than willing to produce copies of all their documentation for you to see.
It is also helpful to check out the locksmith’s references. The locksmith should be willing to provide you with testimonials or with the contact details of previous clients so that you can see if they were happy with the work that was performed. Alternatively, you may wish to ask family and friends what locksmith they have used and if they were happy with them.
Are They Registered With the Police?
As well as checking your locksmith’s identification and qualifications, you should also check that they are registered with the police. They should have a full Police Clearance that they can produce on command. For further security and peace of mind, locksmiths should operate to a confidentiality policy (especially in regards to alarm codes and other specific details of your home’s security).
Check Their Costs
Hiring the services of a locksmith can be expensive, depending on what you need done, so you will obviously want to check their prices before going ahead. Ask how their fees are structured – will they charge a call out fee, do they charge per job or in time blocks, and so forth. You should be able to get a decent estimate of the cost of the job over the phone and the locksmith should confirm the total cost once they have arrived at your premises but before starting work.
Do They Provide an Emergency Service?
One thing that may prove invaluable is choosing a locksmith that provides a 24/7 emergency service, especially if you find yourself locked out in the early hours of the morning, or you need your home to be secured immediately after a break in. Most locksmiths should provide this service for you but you will need to check if it will incur extra costs.
