Architect - How to Choose the Right One

An architect can be a very valuable part of the building process, especially when building a new home or adding an extension or addition. Architects can also be useful in the renovation process. However, to ensure that you get the home that you desire, it is important that you choose the right architect for your needs. Here are a few tips to help you do so.

What Architects Do

Architects advise you on all parts of the building process including:
  • design and planning
  • selecting the correct site for the building
  • carrying out feasibility studies
  • managing the budget
  • managing the building process and team
  • designing the interior of the building
  • landscaping
  • maintaining the building

How to tell if the Architect is Right for You

There are several things to consider when choosing your architect. Perhaps most importantly, you must be comfortable with whom you choose. They should share your vision and have a total understanding of what it is that you want to achieve with the building. The architect should not be at all concerned with “owning the idea” or with imposing a design on you because it is fashionable or something that they like.

To this end, you need to be able to communicate with your architect. You need to be able to describe exactly what the building is to be used for and how you plan to use it. You also need to be specific about the activities or spaces that need to be accommodated in the design, what quality materials and finishes you require, and exactly what your budget is. Will you need your architect to undertake additional activities apart from the building design such as feasibility studies, site selection, budget planning or project management?

As far as cost goes, the architect should charge approximately one percent of the total cost of building and operating the building throughout its useful life. A good architect should be able to draw up the right plans for you even if you are on a limited budget. However, it is a good idea to talk to your architect first to ensure that they are comfortable with working at your budget level.
