Water Feature - Budgeting

A water feature makes a fantastic addition to any backyard but due the wide range of styles available, they can range from a simple feature, to a complex, elaborate one.  You really are limited only by your budget, so here are some tips on how to budget for your water feature.

Designing the Water Feature

If you are choosing a ready-made water feature, then you will likely not have to worry about having someone design it for you.  However, if you are looking for something a little different, or have something special in mind for your garden, you may need the assistance of a professional such as a landscape architect or water feature specialist.  As well as putting your vision onto paper and making it a reality, the professional is able to advise you on things such as the best placement, style, material choice, and practical considerations such as the location of underground services, for your water feature.

Choosing the Materials for the Water Feature

This is the area that is likely to take up the majority of your budget.  There are many different materials that can be used, from steel, to copper, to stone.  However, if you are looking to save money without sacrificing the look of your water feature, some options are:

  • using reproduction stone instead of real stone
  • putting a facia on a wall so that it looks like solid stone
  • rendering and painting Besser Blocks instead of using more expensive blocks
  • using a liner pond rather than a concrete pond
  • a solar pump in a small water feature can eliminate the need for an electrician
  • use imitation bricks or pavers

Buying the Equipment Needed for the Water Feature

In this case, the equipment is the pumps, filters, and assorted accessories that you will need for the water feature.  This can be complicated so it is worth taking the time to speak to a professional, to ensure that you get all the right fittings.  You will need to know the size of the water feature, how high the pump will need to push water, how often you intend to run the pump and for how long, and any other features that your pump may need.  Buy the best pump that you can afford as this is the singular most important aspect of your water feature and you want to get it right.

Other Costs to Consider When Building a Water Feature

When building your water feature, there are other costs to consider besides the water feature itself and the pump.  These include:

  • disposal of waste
  • the hiring of an electrician to connect your water feature
  • aquatic plants and fish
  • any delivery fees for materials
  • water quality test kits and treatment kits
  • the small items such as tubing, nails, screws, glue, and other fittings
  • the hire of tools
