Are you looking for the perfect way to link your indoor and outdoor entertaining areas, or just looking for a door that looks great in your home as well as letting in lots of natural light? Bi-fold doors are perfect for you. Read on to find out more.
Bi-fold doors are perfect to create a link between your indoor and outdoor areas, as when they are closed, they let in heaps of natural light. When they are open and folded away, you will have heaps of ventilation, an unobstructed view, and the freedom of one large entertaining area. If you want to use bi-fold doors in the interior of your home, there are a variety of styles available to match your existing internal doors, allowing you to continue the same feel throughout your home, whether it is a traditional or a modern look. Interior bi-fold doors are perfect for spaces where you don’t have a lot of room, as they fold against one wall when opened. They are perfect for pantries, laundries, dining, lounge, and family areas.
Bi-fold doors are hung and run along a top track. The end leaves are pivoted onto the ground so that they can be easily folded as required. They are commonly made from aluminium or wood. While there are a huge range of styles available, it is important that the doors are sealed properly, otherwise you run the risk of them swelling when they are wet. The cost of a bi-fold door ranges according to the complexity of the design, but a basic set costs around $160, and more complicated sets costs around $500. If you have doors that have more than one fold, the company will usually price these on a per leaf basis.
When selecting your bi-fold doors, you can opt for a number of configurations. For example, you could choose to have an even or uneven number of panels, and you can opt to accompany your doors with a hinge French door option, so that you can easily enter or exit an area without having to fully open up the bi-fold doors. The doors themselves, can be solid or hollow, plain or patterned, and have mouldings or glass panels. As far as the size of the door goes, the recommended maximum door height is 2600mm or 2.6m, with a maximum panel width of 900mm or 0.9m. If you want a higher door, this may be possible but it all depends on the wind zone. Each door panel should weigh no more than 60kg.
For safety reasons, doors, fixed panels, and any glass around the doors need to be made from safety glass. It is possible to use double glazing, in order to improve the door’s energy efficiency, especially in winter.
