Benefits of Reverse Cycle Heating Systems

Topic: Heating

If you are looking to reduce your energy bills substantially, fitting a reverse cycle heating systems - otherwise known as a heat pump - could be the answer to your heating needs.

Compared to conventional electric systems you could be looking at savings of up to a third of the total annual cost of your energy bill. Reverse cycle systems are an energy efficient method of heating or cooling a home.  They can also be used to heat the water for your home.  Reverse cycle systems operate by extracting and utilising the ambient heat that is in the air outside, or in the ground.  Another bonus of these systems is that during summer, they can reverse the cycle and introduce cool air into your home.  And when it comes to selling your home, potential buyers may well be attracted by this energy efficient heating system – so it may be a deal clincher!

How Does it Work?

Air sourced systems work on a fairly simple principle, namely:

  • A fan channels warm air into the heat pump
  • The air passes over a chemical refrigerant which is heat sensitive
  • The chemical becomes hot and is compressed further as it is pumped via a valve
  • This energy is then transferred to a heating coil from the pump
  • A fan then distributes the hot air from the coil to a room or throughout the home

There are also ground based systems, which work on a similar theory, except that they have coils planted in the soil, and absorb heat from the ground and not the atmosphere.

Types of Reverse Cycle Systems

There are three primary types of installations for reverse cycle heating systems.  These include:

  • Single room installations – a unit located on the outside of the home is piped into service a single room
  • Ducted systems – these have a system of ducts channel the air to the whole house via ceiling or floor located piping
  • Split system – where the compressor is located outside with the other components sited in the home

Advantages of Reverse Cycle Heating Systems

Reverse cycle heating systems are economical and energy efficient, and are also:

  • Able to cool and heat a home
  • Safer than traditional heating systems with no exposed elements
  • Durable with long lifespan
  • Able to also filter and dehumidify the air for a home
