Beach Inspired Colours

Australians have a love affair with the beach – so much so that the majority of our population lives within driving distance of the beach.  Now it is possible to bring the beach into the home with the introduction of some beautiful beach-inspired colours.

Neutrals such as soft beiges are the best base to use in this colour palette.  White is also a very popular background palette as it helps to make the feature colours pop and makes a room feel cool.

When bringing the beach into the home, you want to capture the feeling of the water.  This is best done by using colours that you would actually find at the ocean.  To this end, blues and greens are by far the most popular colours used.  The trick is to find cool blues and greens that will calm a room and make it feel refreshing at the same time.  Colours such as navy and olive are right out.  Think more along the lines of cool limes or pistachios paired with soft aqua shades.

As well as colour, texture plays a huge role in creating a beach feel.  Find some glossy ceramics or knobbly rugs in shades that evoke a memory of the sand or water.  Using natural timber or sisal carpeting on the floor will stop the room from feeling too harsh.  It will introduce a feeling of warmness and allow your room to transition from summer to winter, meaning that you can have a beach feel to your home all year round.  In winter, you could even try introducing a few grey shades to create the feel of a storm over the ocean.
